Why did you become a optometrist?
I became an optometrist because I was once a kid who had poor vision and was afraid to go to the eye doctor at the time. For many years I went without glasses and struggled to see in class and in general. I had an eye opening experience when I received my first pair of glasses. The world was literally changed for me when I could see better! So I thought I would love to help people feel that same way about their vision. From that point on (I was a high school senior at the time) I decided to pursue a career in optometry so that I could give people the precious gift of sight.
Interesting Facts

I see a lot of kids who love video games and cartoons and other things that I know about since I have kids of my own with similar interests. I enjoy spending time with my family and going hiking or cooking in my spare time.

How did you start your carrer
I grew up wearing glasses and contacts and always looked forward to getting my eye exams. Since middle school, I knew that I wanted to go into medicine in some capacity. Optometry, as unique as it is, ended up being a perfect fit for me. My optometrist was generous enough to let me shadow her for several weeks and teach me about the profession. I became an optometrist first to help people and I continue because of how much I enjoy seeing my patients succeed!

Why did you become a optometrist?
I became an optometrist because of how precious vision is and how much vision impacts our lives, whether it's learning, working, playing a sport, or just enjoying family time. Why did you become a dentist?
I was inspired to become a dentist in elementary school. In the first grade, a dentist and his assistants visited my school - they talked about dental hygiene and oral health- and they gave us "goodie" bags with toothbrushes and toothpaste. When a friend of mine got her toothbrush, she was so excited which surprised me. She asked for another toothbrush for her brother. The dentist was so kind, gave her extra bags and spent time with her answering questions. After they left she told me she had never been to the dentist. That interaction taught me a few lessons. It was the first time I understood that there were people who did not have easy access to healthcare. It also showed me how powerful an interaction between a child and doctor can be. From that day, I knew what I wanted to do - I wanted to be a dentist for people who did not have easy access to one.

Why did you become a dentist?
I first was interested in dentistry when I was about 8 years old. My dad's best friend J. Stringfellow is a dentist and he never failed to make my sister and I feel welcomed at his office. He treated us kindly which left a strong impression on my sister and I. We would both later pursue dental careers. My interest was childish and naive at first, but fortunately through volunteer assisting and education, it developed into a mature appreciation for the occupation.

Why did you become a dentist?
I had the nicest dentist when I was a kid. I remember going with my mom and while she was getting work done, my dentist would let me play with her instruments. To me it was the best job in the world. Why did you become a optometrist?
In college, I was undecided on a major and was exploring possible career paths when I had the opportunity to attend an open-house at an optometry school with a friend who was going to attend that school. After seeing the school and speaking with students there, I decided to schedule time with a local optometrist to shadow her in the office and see what day-to-day life was like as an optometrist. I found the career appealing because of the work-life balance and the reward of helping people to see better. I was so anxious to start that within just a few weeks I had enrolled in the required prerequisite classes, signed up to take the admission test, and applied for optometry school. I began the program the following year.
