Recovery
After your child's surgery, they will be cared for in same operatory room where they will be closely monitored by our experienced staff until your child is ready to go home. At the time of discharge, we will give you specific instructions regarding your child's home care.
Returning Home After Surgery
- Your child may experience sleepiness, dizziness, or nausea from the use of sedation. These symptoms are normal side effects, which may continue for 12-24 hours. Remember to have your child drink plenty of liquids upon returning home.
- Fill and take the medication prescribed at the surgery appointment.
- DO NOT drink with a straw or suck on hard candies for a minimum of three days. This can rupture the blood clot, which can be detrimental to the healing process.
- DO NOT rinse or spit for 24 hours. It is important to have your child follow a soft food diet for 24-48 hours.
- DO NOT smoke, drink alcohol, or do other illegal substances.
- DO NOT plan to drive a vehical or operate hazardous machinery the same day.
- DO NOT undertake any responsible business or personal matters the same day.
- Muscle aches, a sore jaw or low-grade fever may occur following the sedation. These symptoms are very common and usually disappear within 24 hours.
- A common post-operative complication is a nosebleed, due to dehydration. Itchiness from IV insertion.
- If your child experiences any difficulties following the procedure, please call the oral surgeon or our dental office.
Contact your anesthesiologist provider if your child is:
- Is vomiting repeatedly
- Has temperature of 101°F
