Recovery
After your child's surgery, they will be cared for in a recovery area, where they will be closely monitored by our experienced staff until your child is ready to go home. At the time of discharge, we will give you specific instructions regarding your child's home care.
Returning Home After Surgery
- Your child may experience sleepiness, dizziness, or nausea from the use of anesthesia. These are normal side effects, which may continue for 12-24 hours. Remember to have your child drink plenty of liquids upon returning home.
- If teeth were extracted, DO NOT drink with a straw of suck on hard candies for a minimum of three days. This can rupture the blood clot, which can be detrimental to the healing process. DO NOT rinse or spit for 24 hours. It is important to have your child follow a soft food diet for 24-48 hours.
- Muscle aches, a sore throat, or a low-grade fever may occur following the anesthesia. these symptoms are very common and usually disappear within 24 hours.
- A common post-operative complication is a nosebleed, which is the side effect from the intubation - a breathing tube replacement. The nosebleed usually stops easily by pinching the tip of your child's nose for at least 10-15 minutes.
If your child experiences any difficulties following the procedure, please call us or the anesthesia provider.
